How to let go of emotions involved when letting go of an active function in your own business?
-
The decision to give up active control of your company is a big one, It is also one that a lot of people have a hard time with. There are a lot of emotions involved in giving up control so you are going to have to make sure that you are prepared for this. Getting over those emotions can be a challenge for a lot of people but eventually most will.
The most important thing to do in order to let go of the emotions that you are going to have when you give up active control of your business is to find something else to do. Most people who have started a business are the type that need to have something to do; they can't be happy and content just sitting around. That means that you are going to want to find something else to occupy your time so that you are not constantly thinking about your business.
One of the other things that you are going to have to do in order to deal with the emotions of giving up a business is to develop confidence the person who is running the business. Most people who have built a business have an emotional attachment to it and find that it is hard to let go. In large part this is because they don't believe that anybody can run it as well as they do. If you come to the realization that the new CEO can run the company as well as you did it will be much easier to give up control.
Of course there are a lot of people who have the opposite problem and find it hard to take if the new CEO is better at running the company than they were. The best way to deal with this is to realize that there are different skills involved in managing a successful company and in starting a new one. As the founder you had the skills that were required to start a company, you can take solace in the fact that your new CEO probably does not have the skills to do that.
In general you will find that the best way to get over the emotions of giving up control of your business is to take a step away from the business. You don't want to spend all of your time thinking about the company. This can be hard to do since you are still the owner and do have to have some involvement in the business. However you don't want to be involved in the day to day operation of the company. Keeping your distance will help you get away from managing the company and it will allow you to see that they can do just fine on their own.
